Just six months have elapsed since its launch but the SMOS mission of the European Space Agency (ESA, for its acronym in English) has already obtained the first images. Launched on 2 November, the mission ‘Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity’ (SMOS) is providing information on the water cycle of the Earth by global observations of moisture and ocean salinity. So far, these parameters had been measured from space and are keys to understanding the water cycle and climate variability.
