An isolated incident causing mayhem

The disruption of air traffic last November 17 in North American skies, have forced thousands of travelers to rethink their plans, following an outage that began in Salt Lake City before spreading to the whole system of traffic control Air of the United States. The failure was located in a routing table and resulted in the failure of any system. Unable to route flights or communicate with airports, air traffic controllers were forced to recall techniques “old school” 80 years handling flights manually. The flights were delayed an average of two hours, when they simply have not been deleted.

The experimental rocket texus-46 took off from Kiruva (Sweden) on board with an original experience. A group of researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) has developed a test that would enable them to better understand the formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx) during combustion of kerosene.

Although present in less than the absolute amount of carbon dioxide, and especially much less publicized, NOx have more dramatic consequences for the environment and humans. They are created usually during the combustion of fuel in liquid form. In the case of land vehicles, just a catalyst to effectively reduce NOx emissions. This is unfortunately not possible in the turbine aircraft.

Since a number of years, the aerospace industry working on new fuels that can replace kerosene, and thus making the airline independent of oil. A recent study by the German Center for Aerospace Research (DLR) demonstrated that the fuels of the future might even surpass kerosene for environmental and reliability.

One possible solution, the synthetic fuel Gas to Liquid (GTL ), has already been tested successfully in a commercial flight in October 2009 . In a cooperation between Shell, Rolls-Royce plc and Qatar Airways, a mixture of 50% kerosene and 50% GTL has been used as fuel.
