Researchers of the group of Improved food quality at the Universitat Jaume I have developed an electronic nose that compares the aromatic characteristics of different samples of food.

electronic noseHaving an electronic nose system which discriminates what tomatoes, melons or other products are more attractive bouquet is particularly useful for businesses.

Until now, no known electronic noses “smelled” like and changed throughout the day based on laboratory conditions. To overcome these drifts, researchers have made extensive correction work through a methodology “that can be extrapolated to other teams,” explains researcher at UJI Salvador Rosello.

Researchers from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) are developing at the Campus de Gandia different strands of work relating to conservation of water of rivers and riparian habitats, and to recover their natural and cultural values. Among these researchers are Garofano Virginia Gomez and Francisco Martinez Capel, both members of the Research Institute for Integrated Coastal Zone Management of the UPV (IGIC), based at the Campus de Gandia and Felix French, the Institute of Management Water and Environment of the UPV (IIAMA).

GPS surveying equipmentSeveral of the measures proposed in their projects for the conservation of riparian habitats, a nature area in decline but with a high value for biodiversity, cultural values, and its beneficial effects on water quality.

According to Professor Martinez said Capel, “these ecosystems now face a severe degradation, but the European Water Framework Directive, and moved to our water law reflects the need to consider the riverside forests in water management

On May 4, 1700 the town of Salamanca made prayers to the Virgen de la Vega for rain. This fact, apparently just reached the category of historical anecdote may be part of a line almost unexplored climate research: the historical record. Miguel Angel Fuertes, scientist in the Department of Geology at the University of Salamanca, has followed this trail in the records of capiturales chapter of the Cathedral of Salamanca, a faithful witness of all types of incidents, including weather.

eighteenth-century text“The idea is to obtain paleoclimatic data from different sources,” says Miguel Angel Fuertes. “Recent data from high resolution,” ie less spaced in time that they can provide other data, such as looking at marine sediments his new roommate.

To do this, ideally you have data of temperature or atmospheric pressure taken with instruments, but are only reliable from the mid eighteenth century, so “if we try to study long-term changes in climate, we need information that goes beyond” explains the expert.

An international team of researchers has decoded the genome of the domestic horse Equus caballusAnd have revealed a genomic structure with striking similarities with humans and more than one million genetic differences between different breeds of horses. The work, published this week in ScienceSheds light on a key part of the mammal branch of the evolutionary tree, and provides a starting point to create a map of the genes that cause disease in horses.

TwilightThree years ago, the international team of scientists led by researchers at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard (USA) started a project to decode the genetic pattern of the horse. The effort was based on international collaboration for ten years in order to exploit genomic technologies for the benefit of equine health, known as the Horse Genome Project (the Horse Genome Project).

“Horses and humans have similar diseases, so that identification of the culprits in horses promises to bring a deeper understanding of the diseases in these two bodies.

A scientific study by an international group of researchers at the Research Laboratory of Experimental Economics (LINEEX) suggests that politicians make decisions irrationally. Directed by Professor of the University of Valencia, Enrique Fatas, work with the participation of researchers from the University of Hannover and University of Valencia.
This study questions the idea that politicians make decisions rationally. The work is based on analysis of more than 600 surveys conducted in Europe and the United States to understand the processes of political decision making.
Politicians involved in the study come from several institutions have in common and hold or have held elected office (for the European sample: the European Parliament, national or regional parliaments, national governments, mayors or directly responsible for decisions affecting the public budget ) and having advanced training in economics (at the doctoral or master).
The study, which has seen the light recently in the journal in mathematical economics Journal of Economics, Questions the idea that politicians when they do make decisions respecting the economic rationality. Therefore, comparing budgetary decisions in several areas (combat unemployment, spending on education programs or health, combating regional disparities) in environments in which politicians must make decisions that affect the welfare of citizens and dependent macroeconomic outcomes are not entirely under their control.
Despite the experience in making policy decisions and their academic, politicians are no less exposed study in the irrationality freshmen of Economics at the universities of Valencia and Stanford (California).
Among other things, the politicians were extremely sensitive to changes in arbitrary benchmarks, the status quo initial naive to alterations in the presentation of problems, changes of perspective (positive or negative) which was filed with the problem or changes based on the structure of probabilities.
The decisions of the political class, thus can not be explained with the theory of expected utility (based on neoclassical economic theory) and only partially be explained resorting to psychological theories of choice, the study concludes.
