The glaciers did not get to go away during one of the periods of greatest warming has been on the planet, which took place during the Upper Cretaceous between 93.5 and 89.3 million years.
The existence of ice sheets, which appeared and disappeared in a short period of time, at a time when the temperature was between 6 and 12 degrees Celsius higher than now, contradicts the general assumption that the poles did not have ice at the time of extreme heat, which is suspected it would happen again in the future if left unchecked, the current global warming.

A section of the Wilkins ice shelf, which covers an area of 14,000 square kilometers and is located on the Antarctic Peninsula has started to come away from the Wilkins Ice Shelf in the Antarctic Peninsula as a result of “global warming”, has reported a group of researchers from the Centre for Scientific Research (CSIC) Spanish. The group has found that 25% of the huge plate has been fragmented and huge icebergs can be seen scattered throughout the Southern Ocean.

A research team in Antarctica has discovered traces of tundra, in the form of fossilized plants and insects, which shows that the continent was a warmer place several million years ago, reports the National Science Foundation.
14 million years ago, the region experienced a climate change “abrupt and dramatic” which resulted in a drop of 8 degrees Celsius in a relatively short time in geological terms, what caused the extinction of plants and insects in the tundra and Antarctica became what it is today.

Just six months have elapsed since its launch but the SMOS mission of the European Space Agency (ESA, for its acronym in English) has already obtained the first images. Snapshots on the brightness temperature will be used to understand global changes in soil moisture and ocean salinity to further the knowledge of the water cycle.
Launched on 2 November, the mission ‘Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity’ (SMOS) is providing information on the water cycle of the Earth by global observations of moisture and ocean salinity. So far, these parameters had been measured from space and are keys to understanding the water cycle and climate variability.
