Why South America meets the widest range of plants and animals on the planet? One study, with participation of the Conejos Superior de Investigations Scientifics (CSIC), proposes an explanation beyond ecological factors: the authors reveal the key role played by the birth of the Andes in the emergence and spread of tropical biodiversity a finding that challenges the traditional view that considered the Amazon River drives the expansion of the biodiversity of the region.

The research may point to more effective therapeutic targets for deadly diseases by prions

Scientists at the Scripps Research Institute have determined for the first time that prions, infectious protein fragments devoid of DNA or RNA that can cause fatal neurodegenerative diseases, are capable of Darwinian evolution.

The study of Scripps Florida in Jupiter, USA, shows that prions may develop a large number of mutations at the level of protein and, through natural selection, these mutations can produce evolutionary adaptations such as resistance to drugs, a phenomenon that was known before only in bacteria and viruses. These findings also indicate that the normal prion protein, which occurs naturally in human cells, can become a focus of treatment more effective than their abnormal toxic relationship.

This information is critical to maintain genetic diversity, and will properly develop conservation plans for the water rat (Arvicola sapidus). Researchers at the Biological Station of Doñana (CSIC) and the UGR have jointly addressed the population genetic and phylogeographic study of the species throughout its range (France and the Iberian Peninsula)

Water ratScientists from the Biological Station of Doñana (CSIC) and the University of Granada have characterized the genetic diversity of populations of animal species (in this case, a mouse) throughout its range, a fundamental input to properly develop conservation plans for this species.

This work has been produced by Alejandro Centeno Cuadros,

A team of researchers from the Veterinary Faculty of the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) has developed a simple and rapid method to distinguish the flesh of quail, pheasant, dove and other game birds through DNA analysis. Verification of the authenticity of such meat prevents fraudulent marketing under names that do not correspond with the real identity of the product

Game birdA group of researchers from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, UCM has developed a genetic technique to identify quail meat (Coturnix coturnix), Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus), Painted (Numida meleagris), Grouse (Capercaillie Tetrao), Woodcock (Eurasian Woodcock) And pigeon (Wood Pigeon) And that of the two species of quail that are consumed more often in Spain: the red partridge (Alectoris rufa) And the chukar partridge (Alectoris chukar).

“Now we can differentiate the meat of these species of other birds in everyday use, such as chicken (Gallus gallus), Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo), The Muscovy duck (Carina moschata) Or goose (Anser anser), “Stated Maria Rojas, an author of the study.
