Two NASA spacecraft impact the moon in search of water

NASA has now successfully hit two ships of the LCROSS mission to the surface of the Moon, as confirmed by the U.S. space agency. The objective of this mission is to detect the presence of water ice on the satellite by analyzing the material up on impact. The discovery of water supplies on the moon would facilitate their exploration and establishment of stable human bases.

NASA has guided the Observation and Sensing Satellite Lunar Crater (LCROSS, for its initials in English: Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite) and its Centaur booster rocket to the lunar south pole, namely the Cabeus crater. There Centaur has impacted first, which has generated a plume of dust and sediments to high into the sky.

Discover water molecules on the Moon

A team of NASA scientists have discovered water molecules in the polar regions of the moon thanks to data provided by the Indian spacecraft Chandrayaan-1. The finding, published today in Science, is confirmed by the instruments of other two spacecraft.

The information provided by the instrument M3 (Moon Mineralogy Mapper) spacecraft, built at the Indian spacecraft Chandrayaan-1 has revealed the existence of water molecules in excess of what the scientists predicted. In the lunar soil has also been detected hydroxyl (OH, a molecule composed of one oxygen atom and one hydrogen atom).

The Moon, the coldest place in the Solar System

MoonIt was thought that the coldest place in the solar system could be Pluto, since it is the one farthest from the sun, however, LRO lunar reconnaissance spacecraft, launched last June by NASA, has provided a surprising fact: the coldest place in the Solar System on the Moon, just inside the dark craters near its south pole.

By measuring the temperature of different parts of the satellite, its great variability was found like: if during the day much of its surface can reach 104 º C at night the temperature plummets. As the interior of these craters never gets sunlight, stay in eternal darkness and never climb of -240 º C.

three space laboratoriesTwo to three space laboratories should be launched by China between 2010 and 2015, before the establishment by 2020 of a space station. According to Gu Yidong, former commander and designer of the manned space program, these labs will be used with vessels to test docking technology.
